Why hello! I’m so thrilled you are visiting today! My almost three year old, June, LOVES playing with duplos. But she only had a few, so the husband and I wanted to get her more. But I did’t feel like dishing out $30 on a bunch of ugly colored legos… okay, I think they are ugly colors… so I decided to use some $2 2×2 boards I had in my stash to make her some blocks. And my favorite part about them (other than they are super cheap to make) is that they are color coordinated with her room theme! That is a win-win folks!
First off, I used my chop saw to make all the cuts. I wanted most of the blocks to be square, but I also wanted some odd sized ones in there too. I went through about 2 seven foot boards to make all of my blocks.
Tip: Be careful when you get close to cutting the end of your board- it’s better to cut a larger piece, than to risk a small square, as it can kick up at you. Better safe than sorry!
Once they are all cut, sand down the edges. You don’t want any possibility of splinters in those little baby hands!
Next was the fun part. I spray painted the blocks white, and then went over them again with this teal blue color, to give them an ombre effect! LOVE! It looks like I painted the sky on these beauties!
I didn’t want all the blocks to be solid color, so lining them up while spraying them minimized the other edges getting color on them.
Most of the blocks I painted solid gold, and then some of them I painted coral. I love these three colors together.
Here’s one up close.
The gold tone blends in well with the natural wood look, but it still adds SO much more character than leaving the blocks raw.
June LOVES them. It makes me so happy to see her creating corrals for her toy horses, or lining them up like they are a train! And you better bet we have contests to see how many we can stack! These things are wonderful!
Parents, use your own discretion in the type of paints & wood you use. Especially if your child likes to chew or suck on toys like this. This isn’t an issue with my big girl anymore, so I didn’t have a problem painting them, but that choice is up to you.
So what do you think? I can’t wait to reveal her whole room to you guys. It’s the BEST EVER, and honestly I am so jealous of my own daughter because of the awesome room she has! Haha! Want to see her playroom before we moved here? Go HERE. But you know, this room is even more awesome.
Till next time!
You are so creative and I can't wait to see the room!
what color brand and colored spray paint did you use? Also what other paint color and brands did you use for these blocks?
I think I used a rustoleum spraypaint from walmart, and the coral color was one that I actually just mixed a bunch of colors I had on hand. Hope that helps!
