How I edit my photos with vintage filters (and no photoshop!)

I can’t believe how blessed I am. I have a SUPER wonderful (and hott 😉 husband, a precious newborn, and, lets face it, a stunning, wild spirit, blue eyed girl!
I did an impromptu photoshoot with her a while back, and LOVED the photos I ended up with. It’s never easy photographing a toddler, but one out of every hundred photos is a gem, and some of them can be quite hilarious!
I wanted to share how I edit my photos for a soft, romantic vintage feel. This isn’t a very professional way, and I mainly use it for social media, as the quality of your photo gets decreased, but I LOVE the result.

Here we go! No photoshop required! Yep, that’s right! I email all my favorite photos from my Canon memory card to myself, and then edit them right on my phone. It’s a pain to email, but editing is SO much easier.
I use an app called “Afterlight.” It’s the bomb; and no, I didn’t get paid to say that… though I wish I did. Haha! I think the app is like $2 or $3… so not free but WORTH it!
To edit your photos this way, Open your photo up in Afterlight, and then click on the section highlighted in black. And click Highlights.
Bring it down to soften the white.
Now add some more light in there! I LOVE to take photos in natural light. Always make sure you don’t have an ugly yellow overhead light. It messes up the color. May a time have I gotten great photos of my kids, only to realize 100 photos later, that the overhead light was on. You want beautiful, milky white, natural light.
So go ahead and add even more light in there!
Now we are going to use some filters.
I suggest going light on the filers. Make it look real people!
Russ is a great filter for making skin look great because it tones down contrast.
Now time to color things up again! I LOVE the marine filter because it adds a hint of gold sunshine.
Always save your image as max, if you can help it. Better quality is always best. 🙂
Just a little reminder of what we started out with, and where we ended up.
June is a natural beauty, and the photo wouldn’t look good without her, but this editing process just adds a little bit more of a whimsical nature to it. 😉
I would LOVE for you to stop by my instagram and say hi. I’m obsessed with that site!

Enjoy!
