So one of my most popular post to date (especially during Christmas) is my “How to make Hot Glue Gun Snowflake Window Clings-” (found HERE)
Originally, I glued the snowflakes right on to my windows. Some of them did peel off easily, but most of them took scrubbing to remove. With that said, and with the brilliant input of my lovely readers, I came up with a much better process that requires absolutely no clean up- every time!
You will need:
-Parchment Paper
-A Glue Gun & Glue Sticks
Optional:
-Snowflake patterns to trace over
-Glitter
Lay the parchment paper over your snowflake pattern. The parchment paper is slightly transparent, which makes tracing over patterns quite easily.
Make sure to make your glue lines thick. If you make them too thin, the snowflakes won’t hold together well.
Once they are dry, they peel off the parchment paper like butter. I kid not. It’s amazing!
Looks great, right?
You can make all sorts of shapes and sizes. Remember, no two snowflakes are alike!
If you like glitter, add some while your snowflakes are still drying.
To add them to you windows, simply put a slight dab of hot glue on one or two of the corners of your snowflake, and press up against the glass. They peel off with no issues. If for some reason, you do have a remnant of glue left on the window from adhering them, it will be super easy to clean up compared to peeling a whole snowflake off.
My baby girl started singing “Let it Go” when she saw them.
Reuse them year after year if you like!
You can even dress up your Christmas Gift Wrapping with them!

You HAVE to try out these Hot Glue Gun Snowflake Window Cling for yourself! It’s amazing fun!

Aww! Thanks Anayah!
I can't wait to share the other animals too! It will probably be closer to February because I want to put the whole baby room together, and we are moving in to our new home next week (eeek!)

Love your blog! I came here originally because I saw that you had made up a Nessie pattern too and wanted to check it out. Everything you do is adorable! Thanks for sharing! Charlie @pickledokra.blogspot.com
This is such a neat idea! 🙂
Where did you get the lights you have around your window? I have been looking for some like that.
Hi Robin, thanks so much! They are actually from Walmart ($13) and I spray painted them gold. More details here: http://www.welivedhappilyeverafter.com/2014/07/diy-gold-string-globe-party-lights.html?m=1
I did this on one of the windows in my room– love it! 🙂
Why is it best to use a low heat glue gun???
Hey hannah, I love your blog although i discovered it lil too late. Love your baby's room but i dont know why here in India the DIY culture is so so not there types. Nobody bothers to make things on their own mostly cz the same thing will be available at way cheaper rates in the market but i love adding personal touches to my house just like you 🙂 Im yet to find some time to try out these snowflakes ( i have tried writing merry christmas in hot glue although it turnued out to be a disaster cz the word was too long n wobbly :P) !!
Merry christmas to you n family 🙂
Love from India
Thanks for your sweet note- hope your Christmas was wonderful! XO
This is how I make flexible stencils. I'll create or trace a design and then one the glue dries I'll stick it to whatever I'm painting. It's a fun little trick. I've never used parchment paper though, I'll have to try that. I've been using an old silicone baking mat.
Cute DIY! I'm gonna try it…
Does this produce opaque / milky snowflakes because it pulls the parchment paper coating off with it? It's definitely easier than your previous method, but those appeared clear, where these look whitish. This is such a cute idea though… thanks!
Good question- I'm not sure- they probably were different types of glue sticks (clear vs solid)
Hi Hanna,
I tried making the snowflakes but I can't lift them like yours, with no paper glued on the back. Any special trick? I tried greasing the wax and the parchment paper (I tried both), lifting when it's still kind of warm…but still got paper glued to the back. Help!
Maybe it could be that you are using a super hot glue gun? I used a low temperature one. Or maybe it could be your glue sticks? Hope that helps!
Thank you! Back to the glue gun lab, then… I'll share my findings.
i have actually found that you can add food coloring or paint or dye to add color to hot glue, whatever u can find and like best…but be careful to heat the glue first and then add the dye as u stir…using some type of cup with no color and a strong finish, and then put the dyed glue into silicone molds and pop them into the freezer, an hour later you have cute shapes in different colors and u can use these for anything, magnets and clings…
put dye in hot glue and use silicone molds and put in freezer for half hour to make fun shapes in cute colors, then use them for magnets or window clings or anything, i imagine u could use white glue and paint too ps-if you use hot glue cook it in the microwave in a strong white old mug , and then use your oven mits and spoon to place the dye in, mix, and place in mold…try not to breathe it in, i have no idea if that much glue can be harmful when heated, idk
and by the way, if you leave it in the freezer too long and it wont come out of the mold…just run under warm water for 60 seconds
I remember making these as a kid. We used to add glitter to some elmers glue and then brushed the snowflakes after they cooled. We also added coloring to elmers glue if we wanted. I like your idea of parchment paper,we oiled some foil, very messy.
What else could you use besides parchment paper?
to hang in window rather than on it, use fishing line or invisible thread.
Works for hanging on tree too.
There are colored glue sticks available and also ones with glitter.
