If you’re on Pinterest, I am sure most of you have seen this awesome idea- Writing on your dishes with sharpies! I love Crafty Texas Girl’s Version, A Beautiful Mess also did an adorable version & Brooklyn Limestone has a great plate idea (however, she uses a real ceramic pen for hers.) If you bake the sharpie design on it, its supposed to be permanent. I just had to give this one a try!
First, wash & dry your dishes.
Sketch out your design on a piece of paper to make sure you like it.
Next, use your sharpie (or ceramic pen) to draw on it.
I did a Mr. & Mrs. design as a wedding present.
Supposedly, if your use nail polish remover, you can wipe off any mistakes.
Now, you can bake it. Put it into the oven cold, and heat to 350.
Once it reaches 350, keep it in there for about 30 minutes.
After
the 30 minutes, turn the oven off and let your dishes cool down in the
oven. I did this at night, and left them in there until morning.

And now you have an adorable, personalized, “limited edition,” one of a kind mug!
They are so cute! I am going to have to do this again!
Use and Care:
Since I only did the design on the outside & away from the rim of the cup, I am sure that these are “food safe.” However, if using on something like a plate, I personally would not eat any food directly up against the marker. It’s up to you though.
These should be hand washed.
These make adorable gifts. You could do this for cookie plates you give to your neighbors (write their name on it so they won’t give the plate back.) Or use this as a personalized wedding present (fill them with coffee beans and tea bags) – so many possibilities!
Hope you try it out for yourself! It’s super easy & doesn’t take any time at all!
Love it Hannah!
It's on my to do list
I've gotta go to Ikea or something to get some white dishware!
I know! I'm always on the lookout for dishes to do this with!
Go to Goodwill. I found some plain white plates at $1 a piece. ๐
Good idea! Dollar Store works too! ๐
Nice handwriting! Looks professional.
Thanks!
I did this today, and it washes right off ๐
Oh no! For some reason, it seems works on some ceramic surfaces and not others.
You can always get a ceramic pen for a craft store! I think I am going to invest in one too!

Dollar trees and 99ยข stores all carry Ceramic mugs and bowls!
Yes I did these and it washed off with the Sharpie as well, so I went to Michaels and invested in the ceramic pens. =)
I'm going to get me some ceramic pens. I have no idea why it works on some surfaces and not others. I also did this on some tired platters and it didn't stick, but I just use them for decorative purposes anyways.

I did this to plates and the marker is not permanent it wipes off what should i do?
Sorry it isn't working for you. For some reason, it seems works on some ceramic surfaces and not others.

Once a ceramic marker is used and baked onto the plate, is that foodsafe??? Is there a specific marker that is foodsafe?
I would recommend either using them for decorative purposes, or try to draw in places that will not most likely come in contact with food (outside of cup, plate rims, etc) but if the ceramic marker you use says it's food safe then I'm sure it is (after all, it was made for ceramic dishes!) If you are using this with a sharpie, I recommend using it for just decorative purposes. Hope that helps!
Hi Hannah… this is a wonderful blog post. I am planning on doing a big project with sharpies and ceramic so was kind of researching for tips, techniques and reviews. I came across a couple of posts on pinterest which say that baking sharpie on ceramic didnt work (http://pinterest.com/pin/193865958931780209/).
How has your experience been with them? are they dishwasher safe?
