Homemade Tortillas (you will never go back to Store Bought!)

Today I get to share with you the recipe for Homemade Tortillas that my family has been using for over 3 years… so yeah, it’s really good! 🙂

So here are the ingredients to make 12 medium (larger than the size of your hand) Tortillas:
3 C Flour (plus more for rolling them out)
5 1/4th T Melted Butter
1 T Salt
 I C Hot Water
The secret to this recipe is making sure none of your ingredients are cold. Having warm ingredients insures flexible, pliable dough. That’s why I melt my butter all the way and use hot water.
So mix all your ingredients up using a dough hook, and then portion it out into 12 balls.
I like to cover the ones I am not using yet in a damp towel so they don’t dry out.

Roll them out on top of a light dusting of flour. Try to get them as thin as you can. Some people are lucky enough to have wonderful inventions called a tortilla press like this one:

I’ll have to invest in one some day. *sigh* but when you are used to rolling out 50 of these for big gatherings, 12 is a piece of cake.

I roll one of them out, then put into a hot, covered pan then roll out another one while I am waiting. It is ready when it bubbles on the top (kind of like pancakes!) You really don’t want it to get too brown, the lighter in color it stays, the more flexible they are.

These are incredible to eat while still fresh and hot. Especially with a slab of butter! Yum!

Hope you give these a try! They are so much better than than store bought! You will never go back!

Eat right away or immediately store in an air tight container (so they won’t dry up) for up to a week.

I am totally trying these! Hannah, have you ever tried freezing them? I'm thinking I might do a double batch and freeze them in a Ziploc, so we can use them as needed.

    • I haven't tried freezing them as of yet… they don't normally last long enough for me to have ever tried!

I've read that people do freeze them successfully (but mainly store bought though) Some say that when they freeze homemade tortillas, they really lose their quality. It never hurts to try though! Let me know if it works for you!

      Love, Hannah

I'm going to give these a try. Using ingredients that aren't cold and using a covered pan are new ideas so I'm hoping this recipe will be my go to recipe for tortillas – haven't had a lot of success in the past. Thank you so much for sharing.

Hannah is there a place on this website to print your recipes out or do you mind that they are printed off? I would really like to keep them to use later because i have way too many bookmarks now or i would add it that way. This is such a great recipe and i've tried more then once making tortilla's but mine never worked. Thanks for posting this.

    • Hi Ginger,

I don't currently have "print out versions" of my recipes up, but no, I do not mind you printing them out at all! 🙂

I don't know if you have heard of it yet, but if you like bookmarking stuff, try Pinterest! It's an online "bookmarking" site that takes an image from the site you want to save & you can "pin it" to the board of it's category. Best part is it doesn't take up any space on your computer! 🙂

      Here's my Pinterest Page: http://pinterest.com/Hanhathaway/

      Hope that helps!
